Chronoscout
A Discovery Platform for Watch Enthusiasts
Visit chronoscout.coThe Starting Point:
A Fragmented Market for Passionate Fans
The microbrand watch market is growing fast. Finding new brands and models is still a chore: forums, Instagram, newsletters, hundreds of manufacturer websites. There was no single place to discover, compare and keep track of brands.
I collect watches myself. I knew the problem from my own evenings, not from a market report. I wanted the platform that did not exist.
My Approach:
Pragmatic Decisions, Fast Progress
I did not want to build a perfect product in secret. The goal: a stable platform with real, paying users within six months. That takes speed, clear priorities and technology that does not slow you down.
Built After Hours and on Weekends
Chronoscout was built entirely alongside a full-time job, in the evenings and on weekends. Without cutting corners on quality or pace.
A Stack That Stays Out of the Way
I chose a modern JavaScript stack to keep development and operations as simple as possible.
- Remix on the frontend. Its server-centric model makes loading and saving data much simpler. For a solo developer that means fast, interactive UIs without a separate API and without duplicated logic.
- SQLite as the database. No setup, no server costs, more time for features. With Kysely, a type-safe query builder, even complex queries are quick to write.
- Stripe from day one. The platform had to be able to earn money from the start, not after a rebuild.
From Directory to Platform
A list of watches is not enough. Chronoscout had to be useful to collectors and brands alike. So I built several features that work together.
For Collectors:
Discover, Filter, Never Miss a Drop
- Search & Filters
Every collector has preferences: a diameter that fits the wrist, a price that fits the budget. The filters go well beyond a simple search. Newcomers to the hobby can “build” their ideal watch one criterion at a time. - Real-Time Notifications
Collectors subscribe to their favourite brands and hear about new models immediately. Every watch can be “followed” individually: a message on release, restock and re-release. - Statistics
Chronoscout tracks the availability of thousands of watches. The switch between “available” and “sold out” produces metrics: last available, restock frequency, scarcity score, demand. Fear of missing out turns into predictable collecting.
For Brands:
Self-Service Marketing and Business Intelligence
A dedicated B2B area creates direct revenue and gives brands data they get nowhere else.
- Promotion & Advertising
Brands feature new models on the homepage and in the newsletter. Real-time tracking shows them what the placement brings in. - Business Intelligence
When collectors subscribe to a watch, that is real demand. Chronoscout Intelligence shows brands which models resonate and which are worth restocking or re-releasing.
The Commercial Backbone:
Payments Through Stripe
All payments and subscriptions, for premium features and brand tools alike, run through Stripe. A business foundation that grows with the platform.
The Result:
360+ Brands and 15,000+ Watches in Six Months
In six months, the first line of code became a production platform:
- 360+ watch brands, fully catalogued and classified
- 15,000+ watch models with real-time availability tracking
- 1,300+ collectors signed up
- Automatic alerts for new releases and restocks
- B2B analytics dashboards with scarcity scores, demand tracking and ROI metrics
- Stripe integration for payments and subscriptions
- Bilingual (German/English) from day one
The platform runs stably, with response times under 200 ms.
